It's odd, because although Italian tele-journalism is positively dreadful (as we discuss elsewhere on the site), the stuff they produce for print publication is superb. Italian magazines feature wonderful, wonderful photography - whether it's hard-core warzone reportage or simply advertising, the Italians certainly know how to hire good photographers and how to do beautiful page layouts.

Italy is traditionally pretty hot with book publishing, paper-making and printing, and it's good to see that this expertise shows no sign of dying out. Quality is not compromised.

Obviously we could make a huge list here of some of our favourite news and feature magazines that you might wish to buy, but that might be unnecessarily lengthy - There are thousands of them. Instead, we'll just point out one as an example: 'D' Magazine is given free, once a week with 'La Republicca', a national daily newspaper newspaper. 'D' is short for 'Donna', as it's a women's magazine, packed with fashion and general interest stories, but what's notable is that the fashion photography is usually terrific, with highly original themes to each shoot. It's usually as good as anything you'll see in Vogue, if not better. 'D' isn't printed on glossy paper, but with the photo-reportage the mag also contains, if you like looking at pictures (and you will until you've learnt enough italian to be able to actually read the magazine!), this publication is a fine example of what you can get for free in Rome. A competitor to this is 'io donna' magazine, also a weekly freebie, that comes with another newspaper 'Corriere Della Sera'. If the freebies are this good, just imagine how good the magazines you have to pay for will be...
