Here and below you can see examples of the amazing historical mix of architectural styles in Rome. Above, from right to left are ruins nearly two thousand years old, then some later baroque stuff in the middle, and finally at far left, an enormous modern billboard promoting ecommerce brings the mood of this curious Rome vista right up to date.
At
the right of this picture, this rooftop in Rome's South Trastevere district
could be in Manhattan, but on the other hand, just look at the fascinating
mediaeval-style window and roofing detail on the left of the building.
Notice the curved terra-cotta shingles and the wooden vaulting. And imagine
living there!
Here again, in Piazza Venezia, a litter of baroque, fascist neo-baroque, a ceremonial Roman column, and the old Trajan's Market tower behind it all, which although Roman, in it's ruined state always looks strangely art-deco. It's a crazy mess, but somehow, it all hangs together to make Rome a wildly charming city and a delight and stimulation to the eye at every turn.
